Merit Matters

PLEASE Sign this Petition

Merit Matters, in conjunction with the law firm of Sullivan and Galleshaw (which is graciously providing their time, advice and effort without charge), has launched a petition drive to support an Amicus Curiae (Friend of the Court) Brief that will be filed in the lawsuit brought by the U.S. Justice Department and the FDNY Vulcan Society against the City of New York. This petition will be attached as an exhibit to the Brief. We are asking that you sign the petition and pass it on to all your friends and relatives to illustrate that our concern for the future of the FDNY and the safety of residents and firefighters is widely held.

To sign the petition visit the Sullivan and Galleshaw website:

http://www.sullivangalleshaw.com/fdny.html

If you have any questions or concerns please contact us either through the Merit Matters website or by calling the number below. The goal of this effort can be easily summed up: we want everyone to be treated equally and we want standards of testing, hiring and promotion to be upheld. We live and work in a dangerous world, and a dangerous city- both the residents and firefighters of New York deserve to know that only the most qualified are hired to protect them and work alongside them.

Merit Matters Mission Statement

Merit Matters is an advocacy group dedicated to preserving merit in the FDNY testing, hiring and promotion process. To achieve this we will attempt to:

- Work within the FDNY on issues of mutual concern

- Counter false claims and information disseminated by others

- Seek relief from outside agencies when necessary

- Educate and engage the public through use of the media

- Demand equal treatment for all, which means special privilege for none.

We believe in equal opportunity, not guaranteed results. We want standards to be high, meaningful, equally applied and blind to race, gender or ethnicity. Written and physical exams should ensure that the MOST QUALIFIED applicants are chosen; they should NOT be designed to have as many applicants as possible pass
